A varicocele is an abnormal enlargement of the veins in the scrotum. It develops when the valves inside these veins fail to work properly, causing blood to pool and the veins to swell. It is a common condition in men and can cause scrotal pain or discomfort, visible or enlarged veins, a dragging or heavy sensation, and in some cases reduced sperm quality affecting fertility. Most varicoceles are diagnosed with a physical examination and a scrotal ultrasound, and many are safely and effectively treated with minimally invasive surgery..
